What is Newport Rising?

Newport Rising is a festival to celebrate and remember the Chartist Uprising of 1839, which was the last large-scale armed rebellion against authority in Great Britain and an important milestone on the road to modern democracy.

The Chartists fought for the vote, for the right of the common people to have their voices heard.

Join us this November and add your voice to the chorus.

Events over the upcoming Newport Rising Festival weekend (1-3 November) including the torch lit march, Patrick Jones' 'Renegade Psalms', music workshops and celebrations at the Westgate Hotel. There are also events at the Riverfront, Tredegar House, Gwent Archives and the Senedd over the weeks surrounding the festival, making the 180th anniversary celebrations something really special

Volunteering Opportunities

Newport Rising is a grass roots festival and the first of its kind in Newport. It’s a big project and that’s why we’re looking to the community for help. We'll need fire keepers, agitators, recruiters, standard-bearers, peace keepers (and litter pickers, runners and general helpers) to help us make Newport Rising 2019 even better than the first. Just like the Chartists, we believe that great things are possible when we act together.

There are a number of roles available, but most will require volunteers to be available on the main weekend of the festival (1st - 3rd November) in particular during the march due to take place between 4 and 7 pm on Saturday the 2nd November. Depending on role, volunteers may need to be available for a briefing session prior to the festival weekend.

In return we’ll make sure your contribution is recognised and rewarded, with a professional reference, personal thanks plus free access to events, custom artwork, t-shirts and other goodies and hopefully we’ll all get to be a part of something worth doing for Newport.

Torch-lit March

This spectacular event started last year. It was an amazing success. Hundreds of marchers joined us for the event that started at Belle Vue Park and marched to the Westgate Hotel.

Everyone who took part have commented on how exciting and invigorating it was. We expect it to increase every year so make sure you are early to get a place in the front of the queue.
